ABOUT SUNNY HILLS SERVICES

Sunny Hills Services is a bulwark of strength for young people in gut-wrenching circumstances.  Sunny Hills helps young people dealing with a wide variety of traumas including physical and emotional abuse, sexual exploitation, substance abuse, gang involvement and severe mental health issues. Our work requires deep compassion and tremendous skill, and our people have both. Working with young people in the most difficult, heart-breaking life situations, we help them feel acceptance, develop life skills, and experience—often for the first time—the sensation of hope.  We do this through a broad constellation of innovative behavioral health, education and housing programs, guided by evidence and best practices. Sunny Hills is based in Marin County, and provides services in Marin, Sonoma, Alameda and Napa counties, and is one of the oldest and most committed nonprofits in the Bay Area. We reach approximately 1800 clients a year and another 1,100 family members, with an annual budget of $11.7mm, growing to $13.9 mm in FY2018.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Development is responsible for leading all aspects of the fundraising program at Sunny Hills, including individual, foundation and corporate giving, and special events. The current annual fundraising goal is approximately $1 million, with strong growth potential.  This is a great opportunity for a dynamic individual to take fundraising at Sunny Hills Services to the next level of achievement. Sunny Hills is also poised to launch a major update of its brand, and potentially a new name.

The Director reports to the CEO and is a member of the Senior Leadership Team.  The Director works closely with the Board of Directors and staffs the Development Committee of the Board in coordination with the CEO.  The Director also engages with donors, community leaders and elected officials throughout the Agency’s service area, and collaborates with the Sunny Hills regional Executive Directors in fundraising efforts in their counties.

The Director manages a team of 3 (2.75 FTE), including a Development Assistant, a Grants Officer (.75 FTE) and an Event Planner.  Communications support is currently outsourced. The position is full-time, salaried and based at the Agency’s headquarters in San Anselmo, California, with frequent day travel and occasional overnight travel within the Bay Area.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop and implement a comprehensive, diversified fundraising plan to meet contributed revenue goals exceeding $1.0 million  for Sunny Hills through all channels.

  • Annual fundraising appeal(s) to individual donors through direct mail and online/social media platforms, and develop and implement strategies to increase giving and cultivate new donors
  • Robust grant funding pipeline
  • Fundraising and stewardship events
  • Major donor cultivation and solicitation, and providing support and guidance to the Board of Directors, CEO and regional Executive Directors on donor cultivation and gift solicitation.
  • Initiate planned giving strategies
  • Capital funding campaign(s) as opportunities arise and in coordination with CEO and Board of Directors
  • Define and track key fundraising performance metrics to demonstrate progress toward measureable goals.

Engage with the Board of Directors, fundraising volunteer organizations and committees, and community leaders to ensure their active participation in fundraising activities. Attend Board of Directors quarterly meetings, and staff bi-monthly Development Committee meetings. Coordinate and recognize efforts of volunteer organizations and committees.

Ensure compliance with Agency and Development Department policies, practices and procedures, and consistent with industry best practices. Manage development staff and independent contractors. Ensure timely and accurate donor acknowledgements. Oversee the donor database and ensure high integrity of data collection, data entry and reporting. Develop department revenue/expense budget with CEO and finance department, and manage to that budget.

Ensure consistent brand messaging.  Work in close coordination with the CEO and communications resources to ensure consistent messaging, coordinated timelines and adherence to the Sunny Hills brand platform in all fundraising communications and channels.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 5 years in director or associate director level development role(s), with quantifiable track record of results.
  • 3 year’s experience in managing development teams, ability to build, manage and motivate a strong staff team
  • Experience with most if not all of the following fundraising functions: annual fund concept development, strategy and execution; grant writing and solicitation; event planning and implementation; major donor cultivation; planned giving; social media and online fundraising; volunteer cultivation and management. Capital campaign development and execution preferred, but not required.
  • Understanding of the Bay Area philanthropic community—major funders, foundations and corporate sponsors— with particular knowledge of Alameda, Sonoma and Marin counties strongly preferred. Knowledge and experience with social service fundraising preferred.
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills, and the ability to write and edit compelling and impactful appeals and case statements.
  • Able to build and maintain relationships with key constituents. Passionate about and able to convey effectively the mission of Sunny Hills and our programs, and comfortable presenting to small and large audiences.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed, exceptionally well organized and able to manage time and commitments effectively. Able to manage multiple projects, set clear priorities, delegate effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong aptitude and experience in the use of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint; donor databases, Exceed or Raiser’s Edge preferred, including ability to design reports and extract data. Creative Suite, preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Fundraising certification preferred
  • Valid California driver's license, personal automobile for use on the job, insurable by SHS’ insurance policy based on DMV record and personal vehicle insurance.
  • Clearance of fingerprint and background checks required due to accessibility to children and youth in Agency programs.
