Residential Counselor

The ReStart residential program provides substance use treatment services for to up to ten adolescents ages 13 to 17.  The youth are provided with a safe and structured setting to help them focus on achieving emotional stability, coping skills, and behavioral change, leading to a new lifestyle independent of self-destructive and/or addictive behavior.  The Residential Treatment Counselor provides individualized care and supervision of clients. 


  • Position 1: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday / Hours: 7-3pm (40 hours)
  • Position 2: Friday & Saturday / Hours: 3-11pm (16 hours)
  • Position 3: Sunday / Hours: 7am-3pm (8 hours)


  • Support the Recovery Specialist in providing care and services to clients.
  • Develop rapport with clients based on trust, facilitate peer communication and support in the milieu, and instill a clear sense of personal boundaries.
  • Be familiar with client’s individual treatment plans. Provide feedback to team to ensure client is meeting treatment goals 
  • Enforce rules of program.  
  • Assisting with client outings.
  • Room and bed checks.
  • Supervise clients’ daily health needs.
  • Medication distribution follow program procedures in distributing prescribed and over the counter medications. 
  • Respond to client crisis situations according to agency protocols and individual treatment plans.  

Facility maintenance and management:

  • Oversee youth in completing daily chores, such as cleaning of rooms, doing dishes and cleaning common areas.
  • Oversee and participate in the cleaning of the facility, this may include facility laundry, cleaning of common spaces, cabinets, storage areas and refrigerator.
  • Logging regarding clients’ behavior and whereabouts, incident reports, maintenance requests, medication charting, if needed, police and missing persons’ reports for clients still missing at night, and similar responsibilities.
  • Overnight RC are expected to stay awake during his/her shift.


  • Minimum of one year working full time providing direct service to adolescents OR other experience working in related residential and/or awake overnight care;
  • Associate or BA degree and experience; OR registration as an Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Counselor, meeting State of California requirements
  • Fingerprint clearance through Dept. of Social Services Community Care Licensing
  • Must be 21 years old or older
  • Clearance of TB test, physical exam, fingerprints and any other mandatory State/Federal requirements.
  • A valid California driver's license, personal automobile for use on the job, insurable by SHS’ insurance policy based on DMV record and personal vehicle insurance.
